The Center for Education and Workforce Services 

The Center for Education and Workforce Services is committed to empowering communities and changing the lives of the people we serve. Through our tri-level comprehensive service approach focused on Education, Employment Training with Job Placement Assistance and Wrap Around Service Referrals, individuals and families are equipped with the necessary resources and essential tools needed for their success in the world of work.  The Center partners with local employers, unions, and training providers to offer employment and internship opportunities.

EDUCATION: The Pathway to a More Prosperous Life. 

Our education programs for youth and adults provide participants access to situational learning and development of critical skills need to navigate through life academically and through technical and soft skills needed to become competitive and successful in the 21st century for success in life. 

Educational Components:   

  • ACADEMIC AND SOFT SKILLS REINFOCEMENT LEARNING 

    • Reinforcement plays a vital role in the operant conditioning process and is used as an effective learning tool to encourage desirable behaviors and discourage undesirable ones in school (youth) and on the job (adults) as tool to encourage participants success. 

  • DIGITAL LEARNING - SELF DIRECTED 

    • This educational initiative enables participants to our Technology Learning Center (TLC) to effectively build technology skills, gain basic computer knowledge, navigate the internet to create social media profiles, email accounts and develop an employment portfolio. Group classes are held quarterly for up to 4 hours per session. Participant can bring their own devices i.e., iPad, cell phones, or laptops.   

  • GED TUTORING    

    • The GED General Education Development which is a High School Equivalency Diploma or Certificate that demonstrating that individuals have a quired a level of knowledge equivalent to a high school graduate.

  • SOFT SKILLS 

    • Teaching individuals that learning and mastering the three R’s (reading, writing and arithmetic) is not enough learning for them to be viewed as a well-trained and educated individual to be successful in the 21st century world of work. They will learn that for them to be competitive in this global society, they must also be proficient communicators, creators, critical thinkers, and collaborators (the “Four Cs”).” These courses will focus on the 4 C’s.  

  • TABE TESTING  

    • Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE). The diagnostic test used to determine a person's skill levels and aptitudes in reading, math, and English, needed the classroom, workforce and in life in general. 

  • TECHNICAL TRAINING  

    • A training program designed to allow individuals to strengthen those skills that each employee needs to improve. Our services provide technical skills focus teaching on the Microsoft office Suite of Products. Specifically, Microsoft Excel, Word, Publisher, PowerPoint and Intuit QuickBooks for business owners. Completers will earn a certificate of completion and/or Certifications.   

WORKFORCE SERVICES

Our workforce services program is two-fold, as it focuses on the two main benefits of customer satisfaction for the individual and the employer. 

  • The first is that it provides individuals with customized workforce skills development through career coaching, case management and job placement assistance, affording them the opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills, and develop attitudes that result in improved work performance and/or gainful employment. 

  • The second benefit of this workforce services program is that it provides employers with an effective method to communicate, share, and meet their demand for skilled workers. 

PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES 

Adults Services (Age 18 and Older )  

  • Administrative Customer Services Certification 

    • This program is designed to provide the student the knowledge and skills required for entry-level work as an administrative assistant. The program focuses on the development of both technical and professional proficiencies. It prepares students to perform basic office procedures such as good time management, maintaining a filing system and scheduling appointments. This program also provides useful tools for positive communication with management, co-workers, clients and visitors. Effective communication and business writing workshops facilitated throughout this program provides activities designed to improve writing and grammar skills that are essential in the business office administrative assistant profession. 

  • Core Topics are  

    • Introductory to the Administrative Assistant Profession  

    • Workplace Communication Skills

    • Administrative Office Procedures 

    • Filing and Records Keeping Management 

    • Business English 

    • Bookkeeping and Office Management  

    • Office Systems Application (computers, multi-phones lines, copiers and fax)

  • Adult Self Sufficiency Program 

    • Prepares and position individual’s overcome life’s barriers and hurdles that may be holding them back from accomplishing their goals to become a successful parent, or leader. The Program advocates on behalf of the individual and families to provide them with a pathway to success plan. Advocators help participants create a step-by-step plan to attain their short and long-term goals. This is a 30-day Course, participants are taught:  

      • How Take A Candid Look at Yourself  

      • How to Develop and Set Achievable Short- and Long-Term Goals  

      • How to Develop Self-Help Techniques 

      • Life Skills Management Techniques (Education, Health and Wealth Building)  

      • How to Seek Out Wrap-Around Services  

      Upon completion, participants will have learned the tools necessary to help them become a better You, Advocate, Friend, Life Partner, and/or Parent.  

  • Community Health Workers (CHW) Certification 

    • The CCHW designation is an entry-level credential for front-line health workers who, by virtue of their trusted status in the community, serve as a liaison, link and intermediary between health services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery. 

    • This programs materials and curricula is designed to ensure community health workers (CHWs) learn the skills necessary to serve the target population. Our core curriculum aligns with the standards of the federal government and has adapted materials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Training will be held in cohort small groups to ensure maximum learning.

      Note: Examples of job titles are Community Health Worker positions include but are not limited to Promotores(as) de Salud, Community Health Educator, Health Communicator, Outreach Worker, or Health Advocate. 

  • Community Partnership Program   

  • A full-service training program that recruits, coach, train and prepare workers with the skills necessary for a specific type of industry jobs job and prioritizes the necessity of ongoing workplace education and skills development, as well as addresses the hiring demands of employers. Program Components include: Workshops and training classes are held weekly every Monday Morning from 9:00 to 1:00 at the center and include topics such as:  

    • What Am I looking For; What Employers Want; 

    • Interviewing Techniques 101; Personal Branding, 

    • Workplace Ethics

    • Diversity in the Workplace, 

    • The Art of Negation     

     Note: Upon completion, participants will have learned the tools necessary to help them become a better equipped to enter the world of work with the ability to secure an industry demand profession. 

  • Health Smart Holistic Health for Seniors -Employment Services 

    • A program designed to strengthen the Mind, Body, and Spirit of seniors age 60 and over living in specifically health Zine one with residents located in zip codes.  health zones 32202, 32204, 32206, 32208, 32209 and 32254. Program participants will: 

      • Take part in discussion groups about healthy eating, physical activity, and mental wellness

      • Make social connections with others to promote longevity 

      • Learn how to use a smartphone 

      • Gain access to food pantries and SNAP 

      • Refer family menders to the JUL for free Job training, job placement assistance and money management training  

     Note: Upon completion, participants will experience overall better outlook on life from an aging senior’s perspective experiencing better health, communication with other in their age range, older and/or younger, and use of digital devices.     

 Youth Services (Age 16 to 22)  

  • ACE Youth Leadership Academy 

    • Founded on the premise more than seven decades ago that young people are our most valuable resource, JUL instituted year-round children/youth programming designed to empower youth to excel and succeed. Knowing that a large % of Jacksonville’s youth population falls between the age of 10 to 24 and are the most vulnerable, JUL’s Academic Cultural Enrichment Youth Leadership Academy(ACE-YLA) curriculum is designed to reflect the positive aspects of today’s youth, by providing opportunities for their personal growth, intellectual development and leadership potential through holistic and comprehensive programming that focus on their overall well-being.                                                                                                   

    • Thus, the ACE-YLA programming for which we seek funding, recruits annually 35 youth ages 12 to 21 and enrolls them in curricula that increases their readiness to explore new and creative educational and training concepts. These core concepts are facilitated through cohort group workshops, classroom instruction, hands-on application, and group/panel discussion.

Participants will be engaging in the following:   

  • Academic Enrichment: College career readiness, language arts, environmental literacy and STEM literacy

  • Social and Emotional Health:  Reproductive health, self-advocacy health and wellness, cultural enrichment, diversity and inclusion   

  • Youth Leadership: Service learning, work readiness, entrepreneurship, professional development, healthy self-advocacy, and financial soundness 

  • Civic Engagement: Partnerships, advocacy, justice and service learning, community partnerships and cultural enrichment

Summer “Youth Employment and Learning Program” (YELP) 

    • The Summer “Youth Employment and Learning Program provides Seven ( 7) weeks of paid and volunteer internship- employment opportunities for youth ages 16 to 22 to develop effective communication skill, leadership, team work, constructive work habits, positive attitude, and the valuable job skills necessary to enter the workforce prepared and qualified to be productive employees. Youth will complete an application for employment, attend an onsite interview session with hiring manager of the managing agency. Once hire, youth-employees will attend a three-day orientation and training workshop. Youth will: 

      • Submit and Application for Employment 

      •  Attend a job interview

      • Attend Orientation and training 

      • Be assigned to a Host work site 

      • Attend on-going training sessions as assigned 

      • Get a Paycheck 

      • Participate in a community Service Project 

      • Complete time sheets weekly

      • Participate in the JUL’s Annual Meeting 

      • Coordinate an end of the Year Celebration
